MY PERSONAL WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY

Years ago I thought the answer was all about calories in/calories out, and I used to spend an incredible amount of time focusing on what and how much I “should” eat. I would try to limit my portions, only eat “healthy foods,” and exercise daily.

Of course these tactics would work for a while, but sure enough, after a few weeks or months of strict diet and exercise, I would grow tired of restricting myself and I would over-indulge on a “forbidden food” or fall off my exercise routine. Every time this happened I would feel like a failure! I would blame myself for a lack of willpower and vow to eventually get back on track.

At this time I was just starting my career in nutrition and was counseling my clients to follow similar rules and restrictions as me — and they were running into the same problems.

THERE HAD TO BE A BETTER WAY

I knew that there had to be a better way — a way to lose weight and to keep it off for the long run — without having to constantly focus on diet and exercise. I started doing research and I found that a number of other experts were rejecting the diet approach as well — in favor of something that made much more sense.

I soon came to realize that almost everyone out there is just focusing on WHAT they are eating — carbs, proteins, fats, sugar, calories —but they are missing the real cause of their weight gain. So I began to develop my own approach for long term weight loss, one that throws out all food rules and restrictions, and doesn’t require exercise for the calorie burn. As soon I adopted this approach the weight started to come off. For the past 5 years, I have remained 20 pounds lighter than I was when I was dieting…even after having had three kids!

My method of counseling takes a drastically different approach than much of the “conventional wisdom” about diet and weight loss. In my clinical experience as a registered dietitian (and in my past experience as a struggling dieter), that “conventional wisdom” is just plain wrong. After years of counseling my clients to diet and exercise, and watching them fail miserably, I set out to find a better, more sustainable way.
